To market something, is the act of showing people (potential customers) the value of a product with the aim of selling it. Nowadays everything can be marketed.
In other to do that, before creating a product, we should study the market. We have to listen to what customers want, and that way we can be able to create a product suitable for part of the market (the segment we are interested in called target market).
So we can differentiate between needs, wants and demands. A need is a basic requirement for people to live. When that need is oriented to an specific object we call it want. An when a want is oriented to an specific product and it is needed an extra ability to pay it is called demand.
Marketing plays with those three concepts trying to influence in customers in to, for example, changing a want to a need.
Definition of need-want-demand (number 1)
An example of need would be thirst, the want would be to buy a drink, and the demand would be to buy a Coca-cola.
Defining the needs, wants and demands of the consumers should not just be done once, because these needs are in constant change, so in order to keep up with the market companies need to know what their consumers want or they may loose them.
